I am a Pro Se plaintiff and have an upcoming custody hearing. I would like my friend at my side because she knows the situation well and will be helpful to me. I know she can attend but can she sit at the table with me? What if she testifies?

In the USA courts (even family court) are supposed to be open to the public. So your friend can be there. She can't sit at the table next to you unless you have some explainable difficulties.
She can testify only at full hearings not at motions.
