How do we keep our nieces from going home?

We have had temporary custody of our nieces ages 15 and 16 for the past two years due to a PFA that was placed against their father on their behalf. The PFA expires in two weeks, and the parents are seeking to take thier children from us (I am their maternal aunt). I spoke to a lawyer who said that there is little we can do because custody based on a PFA is different than custody hearings and arrangements and once the PFA expires they can come take them without a hearing. The childern do not want to go home. I do not know what to do. They will be devastated if they have to live back in their parent's home, as their life has drastically improved since I have had them. Do children have rights?
